About

The Unique Experience of Queer People of Color explores the intersectional realities faced by LGBTQIA+ individuals of color and the systemic factors that shape their lived experiences. Participants will examine key frameworks such as Minority Stress (Meyer, 2003) and Racial Battle Fatigue (Williams, 2013) to understand how oppression, stigma, and discrimination intersect to impact mental health. Through discussion, case vignettes, and reflection, this training addresses racism within LGBTQIA+ spaces, homophobia and transphobia within communities of color, and the compounding effects of a hostile political climate. It also explores the influence of religion, family, and culture on identity formation and well-being. Emphasis is placed on developing culturally responsive, affirming, and trauma-informed clinical practices. Participants will learn concrete strategies for providing inclusive care, including the use of developmentally appropriate tools like the Genderbread Person, Gender Unicorn, and Sexuality Galaxy to facilitate identity exploration with youth and families. By centering the voices and resilience of Queer People of Color, this course challenges clinicians to move beyond competence toward humility, advocacy, and authentic allyship. (1.25 hour CEU for Texas LPCs, LCSWs, LMFTs, and Psychologists)
