About

Stereotyping of Black Men & Boys: Psychological Effects and Mental Health Implications examines how historical and contemporary narratives shape the lived experiences, opportunities, and mental health outcomes of Black men and boys. From the origins of controlling images like the Criminal, Thug, Absent Father, Hypersexual Predator, and Athlete, this training explores how these stereotypes continue to drive disparities across education, employment, healthcare, and the criminal justice system. Participants will analyze how these narratives become internalized—leading to racial battle fatigue, emotional suppression, and mistrust of mental health systems—and how systemic racism reinforces trauma through over-policing, incarceration, and economic instability. The session highlights the compounding psychological toll of constantly navigating these stereotypes and the barriers they create to seeking help. Through research, case studies, and reflection, learners will identify strategies for culturally responsive and trauma-informed care. The training emphasizes the importance of cultural humility, trust building, validation, and advocacy to effectively support Black men and boys. By the end, participants will understand how to disrupt stereotypes, affirm strength without reinforcing silence, and promote equity, healing, and authentic connection in clinical and community-based practice. (1.0 hour CEU for Texas LPCs, LCSWs, LMFTs, and Psychologists)
